Thinking Skills: Make 'em Faster

The benefit of good thinking skills: cognitive functioning are many:

Attention and concentration improve

Planning and organization make daily living 'click'

Balance and coordination smooth

Language skills become fluent

Motor abilities reach peak performance

A very highly researched educational and sports training tool, the Interactive Metronome, now is able to deliver it's powerful programs in a person own home environment.

The IM-Home is fun, interactive and challenging. The IM Training delivers measurable results during each session. In3 weeks or about 12 to 14 one-hour session, a person can rewire their brain's networks. This gain increases the rate of transmission of information along the neural pathways.

Fluency in movement, motor planning, behavioral control over impulsivity, ability to concentrate and focus: ALL are positive results of this IM training.

IM-Home is based on the principles of the Interactive Metronome, which has been used for years to help adults, children, elite athletes and as well as with individuals with neurological challenges: to improve neurological and motor functioning.

Individuals with ADD/AHDH as well as people who seek improvements in accuracy and focus will find gains.

Fast Thinking: efficient and effective

Everyone wants to be able to have fast thinking:

to be on-the-ball,

to be able to move with a ball with precision,

to be able to recall information: in business and in school settings,

fast thinking is the KEY!

Cognitive psychologists theorize that the faster we are able to process information (or think), the more intelligent we are, and the more readily we can learn and demonstrate what we’ve learned. There are many recent studies that support this view, including this one published in the journal Intelligence. Each individual is born with a certain amount of resources for attending to and processing information. How well a person allocates those resources appears to be a major factor in determining intelligence. Taub et al (2007) demonstrated that Interactive Metronome (IM) training has a significant positive effect on reading achievement (affecting 4 of 5 critical pre-reading skills) in elementary school students. They proposed that IM training was primarily improving “processing [thinking] speed,” which in turn improved the students’ ability to allocate resources for attending and holding information in working memory … all essential for fluent reading.

Behavior controls are improved including impulsivity and aggressiveness.

Now you can gain IM training in your own home with IM-HOME units. In 3 weeks your processing speeds will be decreased.

A six year old first grader in Mississippi and his parent speak with an interviewer and explain their experiences with training with the Interactive Metronome.

This child has been experiencing difficulty in focusing and accomplishing tasks in school as well as having daily life activity problems.

As you will hear in this interview, the IM process enables gains in concentration and ability to self-regulate at home and school.

The mother expressed her happiness in watching her son prepare his own breakfast cereal. That independence gave both the parent and the child increases in self-esteem.

GOLF TRAINING: A Driving Range for the Brain

Golfers will perform a series of exercises which are designed to improve mind-body timing. Using The Groove application at Brain-Train Cleveland in Westlake. Trainees will attempts to trigger a mechanism in sync with audible and visual guides. Repetition builds proficiency and over time, exceptional results can be achieved.

Establishing a Baseline

First-time users take a one-minute test in which they try to impact a trigger in rhythm with the metronome beat. After each test, a score is calculated representing your impacts' average number of milliseconds (ms), one thousandth of a second, off the metronome beat.

Golfers with normal mind-body timing and focus ability score between 40 and 80 ms, while naturally gifted individuals (e.g., PGA Tour Players) routinely test between 10 and 30 ms. With enough dedicated training on The Groove, most golfers can achieve elite-level scores below 10 ms. Use our 6 session training package this year! Call Diane Massad (440) 835-5071. Golfers Package $250 for 6 lessons

Beginning the Training

Once a baseline has been established, golfers begin training on The Groove. The Groove's neuro-motor engagement regimen uses patented auditory guidance tones and proprietary visual cues to help golfers develop precise mind-body timing and reliably locked-in focus. On the golf course, these improvements result in more consistent ball striking, fewer blow-up holes, better feel around the green and, ultimately, lower handicaps. Golfers who train with The Groove are better equipped to get into a rhythm and maintain it throughout a round. Accuracy will sharpen dramatically!

Duration of the Training

Users will notice some improvement in mind-body timing and focus after one hour of training with The Groove. For substantial improvement in timing and focus, six hours or more of training on The Groove is recommended. Once the 6 hour initial training course is complete, players use fifteen-minute training sessions to tune-up timing and focus before a round.

Goals drive human behaviors~daily!

In childhood, youngsters target basic movement as their goals: skipping, hopping, throwing a ball.

As we age into adulthood, and on the way, human goals become very personalized:

Seeking skills as performers: athletes, musicians, acting, academic proficiencies

Improving cognitive precision in functioning in unique professions and in career pursuits

Adjusting and maximizing abilities to full potentials, especially if deficits are present: whether congenital or acquired

During a NPR interview, author Gary Marcus cites his research for Guitar Zero, to amplify ways to gain musical skills as an adult by recruiting learning skills.

Similarly, Sir William Osler, physician, advocated for aging and the pursuit of accomplishments throughout one's life: cradle to grave. His philosophies were reviewed in this New York Times article

be able to ignore distracters

increase fluency in math and reading

improved academic performance by a full grade level

Though a very direct system of using simple hand or foot movements, the students will respond to a steady beat. They attempt to move their foot [for example] in unison with the beat's sound. In trying to mimic moving to the beat!

The training effect is powerful:

improving behavior control [Ants in Pants] ADD, ADHD

enabling gains on standardized tests: SAT, ACT

Students Can Increase Their Knowledge of Internal Timing by Training with the Interactive Metronome

As a student works with the computer-based training program, the Interactive Metronome, they will become engaged with the process as lots of feedback gives them great connection with the results of their efforts.

Research show us that in engaging a student in the learning process, the brain growth if fired up at the level of the dendrites. And that increases the development of new neural pathways.

By helping kids identify their own internal timing:

what if feels like to be on the beat

or in contrast, behind the beat

They ultimately learn how to counteract their own timing tendency. In regard to sensory input, this gain in ability to self-modulate gives the student more control and self-regulation.

Again, the visual and auditory feedback for the trainee sharpens the abilities to focus and concentrate including:

the ability to tolerate noise in classrooms

reducing distractions awareness

positively increases adaptive responses

improves body awareness

enhances sensory modulation

provides gains on academic benchmarks

The Interactive Metronome is available, world-wide. Find a Provider at the Interactive Metronome site.

Three weeks of Brain Training Yields Measurable Gains

With the series of one-hour sessions, spread over three weeks, the student will generate data in each session. The date describes the various response timing improvements for:

the hands together

the hands, independent of one another

the toes working in alternating ways: left, right, left, right

the toes of one foot moving while balance is maintained by the other foot

the heels: alternating repetitions while alternating usage

the heels, independently working: right only or left only

one hand moving with opposite leg being used: cross-midline work

the reverse of cross-midline work

The last two items demand cross-hemisphere recruitment and spur significant gains in motor planning and sequencing.

Specific signs of gains include:

increases in the ability to focus and concentrate: extended successful studying

tasks get completed much faster or with greater ease: homework

the ability to get started on tasks

an increase in the expression of ideas

increased participation in conversation

increases in the ability to stick with a difficult task

independent work

memory acuity

You will see changes in attention, learning strategies and confidence.

In 3 weeks, Your child's thinking will quicken and skills will improve

Using Brain Train Cleveland's computer-based program, your child will gain speed in their thinking.

With measurable daily results during their training, you child will improve the rate of transmission of information along their nervous system: their brain.

Improvement in their brain's millisecond timing creates improvement in attention, school work, rhythm, and sports actions.

These benefits will become natural:

Better performance on tests

Less distractibility

Better communications: smooth language formation

Memory and retention

Improved coordination: motor planning and sequencing

Less time needed for schoolwork: focus on tasks at hand

Standardized testing that are used across the United States validate Interactive Metronome Training that Brain Train Cleveland offers.

These gains are made by trainees:

Reading levels advance a year or more

Math fluency results in one year or more growth

Brain processing speeds are more efficient

Learning becomes less stressful

These results give the trainee the ability to feel confident as their can effectively focus and complete tasks. Their ability to self-regular their responses: impulsivity or speaking out. The ability to work independently is achieved as they have reduced their frustrations. That surely means more enjoyment at school and at home!

Call Diane Massad for a brief overview of the program's sequences. It will change your brain in 3 weeks. Look at the video for a quick understanding of the process.

The human brain works on a natural rhythm called Timing

The role of rhythm and timing in the human brain affects the cognitive functioning down to a millisecond.

Why is this precise timing important?

IT affects decision-making, mental organizational abilities, coordination, memory, attention and focus as well as communication abilities.

Brain Train Cleveland offers the powerful computer-based training process called the Interactive Metronome. In 3 weeks, with 12 one-hour session, the trainer will have measurable gains in the speed of transmission of information along their nervous system.

This brings nearly one year gains for students, refines the motor planning and sequencing for athletes and musicians.

This step-by-step process will improve attention, self-regulation and processing speeds which yields:

math fluency

language fluency: reading and expressive speech

reduction of frustration and impulsivity

behavioral difficultiews

There is an initial diagnostic analysis of a potential trainee's timing status. In a 20 minute assessment, Diane Massad at Brain Train Cleveland in Westlake, Ohio, will pinpoint the strengths and areas of weakness as a blueprint to develop the 12 session training schedule.

In viewing this video, you can see the way an trainee hears a sound and then is asked to respond by moving a body part: toes, hand clap. The Interactive Metronome program challenges a person's current state of responding and progressively develops a keener timing score.,

Interactive Metronome Training is fun and Builds Kids Skills

Though the actual brain training for children is fun, the computer-based program builds their ability to think faster and make decisions faster, too.

The program is designed to give instant feedback to the training person by very accurately measuring the milliseconds that are used as the trainee responds to sounds by moving a body part: hands, toes, and combinations of both.

The trainee use a headphone set, a computer and a controller for hand or foot. By listening to a beeping sound they move they hands or tap their foot. each time they play they improve their scores.

The progressively designed training will increase the rate of transmission along the body-brain pathways called neurons.

The benefits of this increase in speed will show up in school work as better attention, reading fluency, math fluency, focus and memory: all cognitive functions.

The process occurs over 3 weeks with 12 one-hour lessons. The changes that result are permanent and the cognitive gains are usually one year gains in these 3 weeks!

Students Can Exercise Brain to Maintain Attention and Focus

To be able to block extra sounds and distractions, students can use the Interactive Metronome computer-based training. Within 3 weeks, measurable results will deliver an increased capacity to concentrate.

James Cassily, musician and inventor of this neurological tool, has stated: IM most promising uses include: challenges with motor planning and the sequencing difficulties in rhythmicity and timing. By improving these thinking skills, learning and concentration success result.

When a student [school-age or an adult] trains with this modality, their abilities to concentrate on a lesson, move with coordination and attend to a task are measurably sharpened.

Research studies [read article: Supporting Research] highlight the benefits of this series of 12 one-hour lessons for:

athletes

musicians

students

individuals with learning disabilities

people with ADD or ADHD

neurological problems like: Parkinson's or Alzheimer's

Professional athletes and teams are using this training. It is a cutting edge tool for skill enhancement.

The ability to increase the rate of transmission along the neural pathways yield an increase in performing efficiently on standardized testing like ACT and SAT.

Interactive Metronome is an advanced brain-based treatment program designed to enhance and promote neurological performance and recovery. This is accomplished by using innovative neurosensory and neuromotor exercises developed to improve the brain's inherent ability to repair and remodel itself, a process call neuroplasticity.

IM sessions involve a number of structured, goal-oriented challenges matching hand and foot exercises to precise computer-generated reference tone. In attempting to synchronize the rhythmic beat with repetitive motor actions, a patient engages in a variety of activities, from tapping hands to complex jumping and running tasks; audio-visual guidance system incorporated into the IM software provides immediate feedback and a score to mark patient progress.

Other therapeutic activities may also be incorporated during sessions to increase a client's motivation, endurance/persistence, and feeling of success with the program. Gradually, the client will be able to tolerate increased time and motor complexity involved in the program's activities.

The IM program was originally developed to help improve fine, gross and visual motor skills in children with autism. Since its original conception, IM practitioners have discovered a broad range of positive improvements in all kinds of children and adults.

Research on IM over the last decade has found marked improvement in a diverse range of populations and skill areas, from increased attention and regulation of aggression in boys with ADHD to the improvement of technique and accuracy in recreational golfers. IM not only improves a wide variety of motor functions, its benefits carry over into language, cognitive, and academic domains.

IM provides a structured, goal-oriented training process that uses synchronous movement to improve neuron activity in the brain and central nervous system.

Among the processing areas that are targeted with the use of IM: Target Areas:

Attention and Concentration

Motor Control

Coordination

Visual-motor Skills

Language Processing

Social Communication

Endurance and Strength

Balance

Control of impulsivity or aggression

Motor Planning

Planning/Sequencing

Organization

Reading and Academic Fluency

Who Can Benefit?

Adult and pediatric patients who have benefited from IM include those with:

Sensory Integration Dysfunction

Asperges Syndrome

Autism Spectrum Disorder

ADD/ADHD

Cerebral Palsy

Academic/Sports Performance

Cognitive/Developmental Disorders

CVA and Brain Injury

In recent brain research, a study shows the levels of fatigue and depression drop with physical activity. Read this article.

The benefits of exercise for muscles also extends benefits to the mind.

Reduction in levels of fatigue, both physiological for muscles and neurologically for brain cells.

Increases in oxygenation to brain cells and systemic cell oxygen delivery.

The demands of exercise positively condition the cardiac muscles as well as the body's musculature.

Respiratory work-outs increase oxygen volume capacities.

Move it! and frequently should be a message of self-talk to motivate time investment in personal training.

Learn to learn! IT 's the HOW we learn that will open doors…

Educators comb through research to determine the facts about hoe people acquire information. Theories emerge and those various theories spawn industries to spread their news!

Any historical review, short-ranged by the past decade or long-ranged over the millenniums, will discover pedagological beliefs:

about learning styles: visual, auditory or movement-based

about the importance of repetition

advocating for rote memorization

debating liberal arts curriculum versus specialization in higher education

This author poses that the educators and caregivers become esteemed for their abilities and knowledge. The experiences and education and intentions must be valued and allowed to affect students.

The myriad of evidence-based and driven behaviors in the business of education have so altered both the participants: the teachers and the students.

The joys of learning have been drained in the fear-based structuring of assessments the place an evaluation on the tail end of the learning process.

Give joy and make the process and enticing one! That open-ended approach will allow and engage those who desire to serve as teachers to use their own abilities in their own ways. A person who comes into the classroom, having made a professional commitment to render daily service [under a contract] must have the freedom to both design and unroll their concept of a fruitful pathway through the school year.

Let the teachers determine the individual child's nature at the point in time when the student comes to the educational process. Those determinations require the teacher to both know themselves and observe and interpret they child they meet in the classroom.

Cannot we not TRUST the teacher to determine how their own skills can best serve the children who come before them? Mandating and evaluating provide quality controls in manufacturing products.

In nurturing children, the education's AIMS are to develop a child's potential so the child can express all that is harmonious and the maximum in humans.

Play Times Offer Opportunities to Encourage Movement Exploration

Use the play minutes to give your child's skills a subtle boost. When watching your child's attempts to

swing

climb

grip

slide

spin

run

jump

skip

on their accessible and safe playgrounds, try to establish the attitude that trying and exploring are great ways to learn. To gain abilities: whether cognitive skills or physical skills for kids.

Once the desire to do and move are a part of a person's habits, the opportunity for skill development and refinement will present itself.

When a particular challenge presents itself, try to encourage simple ways for your child to attempt to explore the possibilities of climbing a pole, for example. Your subtle assistance by coming closer to the child, boosting them a bit to start or holding them during the first attempts insures a safe and successful experience.

Each of us, kids or adults find a prime route for learning. The HOW of processing information falls into either:

a visual route

a listening route

a feeling by moving route

When we can decide which mode gets learning accomplished most efficiently…internally…we then know the dominant method to teach to that person.

it is that understanding of HOW people learn that will then allow a teacher or caregivers/parent to encourage:

anchoring the ability to response successfully to a stimulus

understanding the state of mind of the learner

using some aspect of physiology to affect postively learning: rate of breathing, eye focus, hearing skills

experiencing activities in a frame of reference that has meaning

modeling an activity or behavior by someone that the learner can duplicate

In the process of gaining skills, the teacher can aid learning by dispelling fears and nurturing performance attempts.

Read in the New York Times the details of a study done at the University of Illinois that reconfirms the powerful effects of movement and physical activities on the human brain.

The neural system is attuned by the muscle contraction as the messages are transmitted, interactively, between the brain's desire to initiate motion and the target body involvement. When the body response to a brain message, the dendrites [wiring] and the synaptic transmission unions [connectors] are pumped UP.

The bonus is the whole physical activity package is growth in brain cells for cognitive functioning.

Whether one is 8 months or in their 8th decade, getting the neural system to fire up is the best method to keep bright and bouyant!

With a daily regularity children's brain activity must be encouraged through physical activity that stimulates the neural system, including the synaptic connections.

The more message carrying that the nerves perform: the more strength and dendrite proliferation will occur.

Get kids into active play and kids games to give that neural system a shower of messages.

Try using Kidskills' Training Manuals that are aimed at the caregivers of preschoolers and toddlers. These books are filled with very simple, step-by-step progressions that will take youngsters along a logically curriculum towards competency in moving WELL!

for sports readiness

for self-confidence

for spatial awareness

for motor skill development

for coordination

The system is geared for a a team: the CHILD and their first teacher : a parent! Preschool learning is a time for rich cognitive growth of the neural system for brain development.

Play Times for Children Boost Kids Brains & Kids Skills

Again, Swiss researchers article finds that good stimulation and engagement through active learning and play increase the neural network for children.

Make certain that the children in your care get their daily dose of active play and active learning through lots of movement.

Exploring their neighborhoods and finding new skills on the playgrounds like:

climbing

sliding

swinging

hanging

running

inverting

All these activities stimulate the neural system and build stronger connections and denser synaptic connections: the links between brain and muscle cells. Cognitive functions build too!

The more of those: THE BETTER for children's body-mind connectivity and good learning!

Make certain you MAKE time to read this book review from the New York Times.

The main functioning of the mirror neurons in our brains provides a host of cues and modeling for our own knowledge.

In a process of careful observations and empathizing, a human can embed information that will enhance their own cognitive functions in the future.

The eye and the supporting optical system bring rich saturation of information to the brain cells.

That role of the mirror neurons highlights the importance of viewing good movement patterns in order to understand the movement sequencing that is imperative to successful motor control.

At the PLAY web site discover the options that you, a caregiver for youngsters could provide for your children.

If you could use a simple physical skills training program for the preschoolers in your life, look of the 6 part KidSKILLS Training Program.

Along with the shower of opportunities to initiate change as the New Year begins, please consider adding work on your brain to your personal fitness goals.

Olivier Sacks, offers a perspective in his article at the New York Times.

The ability to direct energy towards a goal, intentional behavior, used to be called will power. Historically, a person could recruit their personal will to accomplish a task.

The importance of sleep or the lack of sleep is an essential factor to monitor as general brain health is assessed.

Research published in the Proceedings for the National Academy of Science has shown that a lack of sleep affects the hippocampus, the region of the brain taht aids memory formation.

Elevated presence of corticosterone, a stress hormone, supressed cell production with sleep deprivation. This study was lead by Dr. Elizabeth Gould. The lack of sleep detered neurogenesis and may underlie some cognitive deficits that are associated with prolonged sleep absence.

Concentration problems may also be experienced with sleep deficits. Questions still persist about the partial loss of sleep.

The sleep lack effects extended over two weeks before nerve cell production was restored.

Those individuals who missed rest for extended periods [72 hours] had higher levels of corticosterone, which when sustained, allowed fewer new brain cells to be produced. Read futher.

Significant motor learning curve increases

Brain Train Cleveland has chosen to offer Interactive Metronome Training to our clients because of its therapeutic benefits. it increases the motor learning curve significantly for new skills.

When a learning plateau has been reached but minor qualitative changes remain to be made, the IM helps shift the learning onto a new plane.

It enhances the quality and timeliness of responses. While it is one of many state of the art interventions, our staff recommends its use for children who require find tuning and aslo for those who need an extra boost.

IM is a non-invasive modality and shifts the responsibility for change onto the child himself.

A secondary benefit of the IM is that it provides us with a method to measure, quantitatively, the changes we see qualitatively.

Most importantly, the IM allow us to empower children who have rarely felt in control of themselves or their lives.

Please consider choosing Brain Train Cleveland to increase cognitive functionality for you or your loved one.

Call (440) 835.5071 or use a contact form on this web site to reach Diane Massad, CIMT, Director.

Motor Planning in Sports Refined with Brain Training

Using a innovative technology called the Interactive Metronome, sports training is accomplished by isolating motor planning and sequencing tasks away from any athletic movement.

Working with the IM brain training protocol in a systematic manner over three weeks, the trainee responses to a computer generated beat with a simple movement of one or two body parts.

The hand, feet or a combination of hands and feet send impulses to the computer. then the computer provides audio feedback to help the trainee get closer and closer to a precise beat.

This refining results in a decrease in the time it takes for information to travel along a nerve. Quicker message transmission connects the brain and the muscle responses to allow precision in motor sequencing.

This training method is ideal for athletes but also aids musicians and all students gain fluency in processing information acquisition.

Contact Brain Train Cleveland in northeast Ohio to schedule a FREE timing survey for you.

ADD in Children Should be Addressed Urges Dr. Amen

Leading neuroscientist and an advocate for the use of brain sans to determine brain tissue health, Dr. Daniel Amen of California, urges that children with signs of Attention Deficit Disorder will be well served if those challenges are addressed.

Dr. Amen also advocates for noninvasive treatment of ADD and ADHD . One of the therapies that is available for cognitive and behavioral issues is the Interactive Metronome.

This computer-based modality is able to improve the rate of tansmission along the neural pathways. the result of this improvement is a more intergrated response between the intentions and the source of the intentions: the brain. When messages flow smoothly between brain and body, the motor sequencing and timing fluency results in a synchronized act.

Focus and attention are sharpened as the messages to self-regulate are delivered rapidly to the brain.

Visit Brain-Train to have your own timing survey completed in a FREE 20 minute session. Call (440)835.5071.

Dr. Stanley I. Greenspan, noted child psychiatrist in the Washington, D.C. area has recommended the Interactive Metronome training process for years. “IM provides a long needed and important tool for improving a critical foundation in the learning process.: the speed of the processing messages along the neural pathways.”
Permanent results are measurable as you train with the Interactive Metronome technology. The IM program uses a neural-training device that can accurately measure and systematically improve a person’s timing.
Performances in sports, music, academics, focus and behavior management and control are benefits.

If there is a song that makes you feel peppy! Take that beat into your brain’s silent speech.

If it causes you to start:

to tap a beat on the desktop

to sway with the rhythm in your head

to move your body

to step about the room

that is just key to keeping brain and body in tune!

Your neural system thrives with use and recruiting muscle and mind strengthens existing synapses and stimulates new cell growth. That growth is called neurogenisis.

The Rocky River Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring their annual Business EXPO at the Umberly Civic Center on October 14, 2010. Brain Train Cleveland will join the Chamber for a second time as an exhibitor.

Visitors will be able to check their own brain timing ratings against leading professional athletes who have used the Interactive Metronome program to enhance their physical and mental skills.

The IM process sharpens both neural processing speeds along the synapses of the nervous system as well as improving accuracy in motor sequencing.

Professional golfers, professional sports teams, intercollegiate sports teams and professional musical performance groups have used the IM training to improve their skills.

Be sure to join us and test your own timing rating in a quick two minute survey at the Rocky River Chamber of Commerce Business Expo this October 14th.
